    What Nigerians must do to defend democracy - Bukola Saraki


    The immediate past Senate president, Bukola Saraki, has said that the commemoration of the 2019 Democracy Day is a reminder that a government for, of, and by the people is and must be Nigeria’s only recourse.

    Saraki who made the statement on Wednesday, June 12, in a tweet when marking the 2019 Democracy Day, called on Nigerians to commit to playing individual roles in the defence of Nigeria’s democracy.

    "#DemocracyDay is a sombre commemoration of our nation’s history. It is a reminder that a government for, of, and by the people is and must be Nigeria’s only recourse," he stated

    "As we commemorate today, and remember our heroes like Chief MKO Abiola, we must all collectively commit to playing our own individual roles in the defence of Nigeria’s democracy. #DemocracyDay"

    Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has renamed the Abuja Stadium as the Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola Stadium. The president made this decision in honour of the late businessman and presidential aspirant on Wednesday, June 12.

    The president honoured Abiola during the nation's Democracy Day celebration which took place in Abuja and was attended by world leaders.

    In a related report, President Muhammadu Buhari has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Nigerian security agencies for conducting free and fair general polls in 2019 that brought him to power for second term.

    Buhari made the commendation during the June 12 Democracy Day celebration at the Eagle Square in Abuja, The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports

    He said that INEC was given all the necessary support by providing the commission with all the resources needed for successful electoral process.
