West Ham to face Mark Hughes’s Southampton

    ‘Southampton to appoint Mark Hughes’

On Monday night Southampton finally sacked Mauricio Pellegrino as manager at St Mary’s.

Following a 3-0 defeat at Newcastle last weekend, Southampton are fourth bottom of the league and in grave danger of the dropping into the Championship.

Few could be surprised by Pellegrino’s sacking after a run of one win in 17 games. He was also loathed by large sections of the fan base.

So how will Southampton fans react to the news that Mark Hughes is set to get the job in the next 24-hours?

    The Mirror have announced:

Mark Hughes is closing in on a return to Premier League management at Southampton.

Talks between Hughes and the relegation-threatened south coast club have begun and his appointment could be confirmed within the next 24 hours provided they are concluded without a hitch.

Hughes, 54, has been lined up to become manager of the club he played for between 1998 and 2000 and would be supported by his trusted coaching sidekicks Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki.

That last point is key, as Pellegrino’s assistants were also given the boot by Southampton.

    West Ham vs Southampton

Southampton are in FA Cup action at the weekend when they take on Man City’s slayers, Wigan Athletic.

Wigan, the former FA Cup winners under Roberto Martinez, will be fancied by many romantics to knock the Saints out.

However the far bigger match on Southampton’s horizon is their next Premier League fixture on March 31: West Ham away.

That match is sure to be a relegation six-pointer, in which the loser will no-doubt fall into ever greater danger of relegation.
