Thai Princess Officially Disqualified From Running For Prime Minister

Thailand’s Princess Ubolratana, the elder sister of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, is officially disqualified from running for prime minister in the March 24 general election, according to the Election Commission.

The commission released the list of qualified prime ministerial candidates from 45 parties on Monday and the 67-year-old princess is not on the list.

The commission’s decision came three days after Thai Raksa Chart, a party recently founded by allies of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, nominated the princess as their prime ministerial candidate in an unprecedented move.

But the shocking bid and hopes by some for a princess-led political reconciliation were soon quashed by the king’s written statement made on the same day, calling her involvement in politics unconstitutional and highly inappropriate.
