Portia de Rossi Reveals She Has Quit Acting
Don’t expect to see Portia de Rossi on the small screen after the new season of Arrested Development.
The 45-year-old recently revealed she’s quit acting when she went to visit her wife, Ellen DeGeneres, on her talk show.
The Australian actress is well known for her roles on the shows Scandal, Ally McBeal, Arrested Development, and Nip/Tuck. On Ellen, she said that she made the decision to retire over a year ago.
“I called Mitch Hurwitz, who created Arrested Development, and I said if there is a Season 5, I won’t be doing it because I quit acting. He seemed really understanding and he totally got it. We had a great conversation — and then he wrote me into five episodes,” she said. “Don’t know how it happened, but, yes, I am on Season 5.”
Following the premiere of the comedy’s new season on May 29, Portia will instead focus growing her business, General Public, an art curation and publishing company that uses 3-D printing. Having studied art in school, the star worked with Fujifilm to develop a system called Synograph, which prints paintings.
She said that her decision to quit acting came as she began looking for something new to do that would be challenging and different.
“I kind of knew what acting would look like for me for the next 10, 20 years, so I decided to quit and start a business,” she said. “I don’t want to regret not trying something.”
