Mauricio Pochettino compares Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Winks to Xavi and Andres Iniesta

Mauricio Pochettino has compared Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks to FC Barcelona legends Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta.

Earlier this week, Gareth Southgate bemoaned the nation’s lack of creative players, however, Pochettino believes he again has the answer to the Three Lions’ problems in Winks.

The 22-year-old has been struggling with a long-term ankle injury but looks to be finally returning to full fitness and is expected to feature against Liverpool on Saturday.

Mauricio Pochettino has drawn comparisons between Harry Winks and Spanish legends Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta.

The Argentine believes the Tottenham academy product is “the perfect midfield player”.

    Pochettino said:

“Harry has the profile of the perfect midfield player.

“His characteristics are perfect. When we talk about midfielders like Xavi and Iniesta, he’s like this type of player.

“He has this capacity but he needs to take my words in a very positive way – he needs a lot of work.

“He has the possibility and the potential, of course, but now it is up to him and we go again: mentality.

“In his mind he is capable to learn about suffering: there never is enough training, always try to be better.”

Pochettino on Winks: “He will be one of the best midfielders in England”

England’s lack of creative left them falling just short in Russia as Luka Modric’s Croatia defeated the Three Lions to reach the World Cup final.

This lack of creativity has been much discussed in England, however, Pochettino believes Harry Winks is the player to solve England’s biggest issue on the pitch.

“Football must be his focus, not the business around football.

“Maybe he will play at a very good level and be one of the best midfielders in England.

“If he wants to take my advice, take it. If people don’t want to take it, we cannot help.

“But of course his potential is to be a very, very good player for England and Tottenham.

“First for Tottenham and then, if England believe that he can help them, for England, too.”

Since suffering ankle ligament damage at Burnley back in April 2017, Harry Winks has been in and out of contention.

After returning from injury the following season to twice put in two dominant displays against Real Madrid, the injury once again flared up.

This then caused the midfielder to miss the majority of last season after undergoing surgery.

Winks is hoping that after long-winded surgery his injury struggles have disappeared as he prepares to face Liverpool tomorrow.
