Jose Mourinho explains why he dropped Ander Herrera for the Basel clash

Jose Mourinho has explained why Ander Herrera lost his place in the squad to face Basel in Man United’s opening Champions League fixture – and said that it’s nothing to do with the player making a mistake or losing his trust, more that the squad is so strong and there is a huge amount of competition for places.

The Express report Mourinho said: “We are playing only with two midfield players, with Matic and Pogba, who are playing really well and without reason to change.

“The only match we decided to play with three [Herrera] played, today we went back to two again.

“And I had on the bench [Michael] Carrick and [Marouane] Fellaini, which were also important players last season.

We have a group of players who must be ready to play and not to play.

“Ashley Young was not on the bench in the last match and today he started the match and played 90 minutes.

“And the next match you can have another surprise of some player you think is going to play and is not going to play.

“It’s the squad we have, I have to use the players and that’s the life in clubs with squads of quality.”

    Fighting for his place

Herrera has attracted interest from several clubs, yet it seems he does not want to leave United, and will fight for his place and sign a new contract.

Given Barcelona have been linked with him, that shows a remarkable faith in United and Mourinho – and given the manager rewards loyalty, not to mention the fact Paul Pogba is set to be out for some time and free up a place in the first team means Herrera may well be able to work his way back into the side sooner than he may have thought.
