John Stones opens up about England target before clash with Belgium

    Next round

John Stones has spoken about England’s hopes for the rest of the World Cup, and noted that they’re not getting complacent after an opening game win.

The Three Lions of course won 2-1 at the last minute with a Harry Kane winner – and the three points put them in a great position.

However, Stones has noted that the team are determined to make their next game count, and aren’t looking at the final game to scrape through – they want to qualify as early as possible.

He spoke with Standard Sport and said: “It would be great to wrap up qualification this weekend – that’s the aim. We want to get through the group stage as quickly as possible.

“Obviously it is a case of one game at a time and we can’t look past that. But if we have the right mentality and focus all our energy on Panama, we will do the job.

“We will know the result of the Tunisia-Belgium game before we play so we will know whether it is possible or not.

“It should definitely be great motivation for us if Tunisia haven’t won. We have come here to progress to the next round. If we can do that in two games rather three, even better.”

One player who England will be aware of facing in the group stages is Romelu Lukaku, who of course the players know very well from their club action.

Lukaku is on fire at the minute and showed the very best of his game in Belgium’s World Cup 2018 debut, and while Eden Hazard struggled, the Man United man thrived and showed exactly what he can do – something Stones and the rest of the England defenders will be very aware of, and perhaps a reason they want qualifying sewn up before that game.
