Fulham make £10m bid for Southampton full-back

Sky Sports News are today reporting that Premier League newcomers Fulham, have made a £10 million bid for 22-year-old Southampton left-back, Matt Targett.

However, as per the report from Sky Sports News, Southampton have no intention of selling Targett as they see him as a key player in Southampton’s future.

Targett spent the second half of last season on loan at Fulham, playing 21, scoring one and assisting two and it seems after his excellent loan spell at Fulham, they now wish the make the deal permanent.

    Play-off winners

Fulham enjoyed a very impressive 2017/18 Championship campaign. They finished 3rd in the Championship and scored a superb 79 goals in 46 league games. Only league winners Wolves managed more.

As a result of finishing 3rd Fulham earned themselves a playoff spot. They would beat Derby County 2-1 over two legs of the semi-final and they would go on to beat Aston Villa 1-0 in the final.

Now that Fulham have returned to the top flight of English football for the first time in four years, they are looking to improve upon their squad in order to survive the upcoming season and signing Targett on a permanent basis would go some way to doing that.

    A difficult season

Southampton had a tough 2017/18 Premier League season. They finished 17th in the league and avoided relegation by just three points.

A large reason for Southampton struggling last season was due to their lack of goals.

In 38 Premier League games Southampton scored just 37 goals. Furthermore, all of their strikers struggled to find the back of the net.

Charlie Austin finished the Saints top scorer on just seven goals.  Manolo Gabbiadini did even worse and scored just five league goals.

Furthermore, Shane Long managed just two Premier League goals in the 2017/18 season.

14 goals between three strikers over a full season is simply unacceptable and Southampton need to improve their forwards otherwise they could face another relegation battle next season.

Moreover, given what a quality second half of the season Targett had at Fulham, Southampton would be mad to sell him to them rather than use him as a key full-back next season.
