EPL: Manchester United vs Leicester City: Team news, injuries, possible lineups

Manchester United will tonight clash with Leicester City in the opening game of the English Premier League (EPL) season at Old Trafford.

United have endured a difficult pre-season period full of fitness and transfer frustrations, but won their opening game in each of the last three EPL seasons.

Jose Mourinho’s side finished second position last term, 19-point gap behind Premier League champions, Manchester City.

The Red Devils have an extensive injury list including midfielders, Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera as well as captain Antonio Valencia.

Defender, Eric Bailly is another doubt so Victor Lindelof is on standby to partner Chris Smalling in a defence, which could also include: Matteo Darmian and Luke Shaw.

The World Cup contingent of Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Jesse Lingard, Romelu Lukaku and Pogba are unlikely to feature, while Marcus Rashford may be rushed back to play wide left due to Mourinho’s shortage of options, which is not helped by Anthony Martial’s uncertain future, with Alexi Sanchez expected to start through the middle.

New signing, Fred will make his debut in a three-man midfield designed to get the best out of Pogba on his return.

Meanwhile, Claude Puel’s Leicester City does not have as many personnel issues as Mourinho but key players, Jamie Vardy and Harry Maguire, did return late to training following their World Cup exploits.

Puel claims neither of them will start but a slight injury to defender, Jonny Evans means he could rethink and name Maguire in the line-up.

Striker, Kelechi Iheanacho has scored four goals in three pre-season games so should lead the line and allow Vardy time to recover.

Puel could hand debuts to Ricardo Pereira and Maddison, and will make a late call on Evans who is nursing a muscle strain.

Manchester United’s potential starting XI: De Gea; Lindelof, Bailly, Smalling, Shaw; Fred, Herrera, Pereira; Mata, Sanchez, Rashford.

Leicester City’s potential starting XI: Schmeichel; Pereira, Morgan, Maguire, Chilwell; Ndidi, Iborra; Diabate, Maddison, Albrighton; Iheanacho

The kick-off time of the game is 8pm.
