England star Eric Dier plays down injury fears ahead of World Cup

Eric Dier has moved to quell injury worries ahead of England’s opening game at the World Cup, and noted that far from being worried about playing in the opening game of the group, he’s actually really excited for the World Cup and to get out and see Russia – and one city in particular.

People had wondered if he was carrying a knock given he was seen wearing strapping in training, but that’s nothing according to the player.

He spoke to Standard Sport and said: “I am fine, thank you,

“It is just a superstition more than anything now.

“It’s just because I’ve had a problem with my leg and it’s cleared up now. But I was wearing the strapping before and I just haven’t stopped wearing it yet. I will eventually!

“We were in the hotel and training this morning. I know over the next few days we can if we want to, so I am sure myself and others will get out and about.

“I’d like to go and see St Petersburg. Apparently, it is a beautiful city. I think it’s one of the most European cities in Russia, so I am looking forward to seeing the city.

“My friend’s brother used to play here at St Petersburg and he said the city was very beautiful, so it will be nice to go and see it.”

One player who could be a concern is Marcus Rashford, who did pick up a knock in training before England flew out to Russia.

He might be a minor doubt for the opening game, but is expected to be fit for the rest of the tournament and will be looking to play a big role in England’s chances, even if it is off the bench, after impressing against Costa Rica when handed a chance by Gareth Southgate.
