Chelsea to offer Roma star a €5m per year contract

Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport are today reporting that Chelsea are willing to offer Roma defender Kostas Manolas a €5m per year contract.

Manolas has a €36 million release clause which Chelsea are also reportedly willing to trigger to bring the Greek to Stamford Bridge.

    Dominant centre-back

Manolas signed for AS Roma in August of 2014 from Greek side Olympiacos for a fee in the region of £11.7 million.

Manolas played 74 games during his time at Olympiacos winning the Greek league twice and also the Greek cup twice.

Since moving to Roma though Manolas has proven to be a world class centre back.

Manolas has played 171 games for the Italian side, scoring six and assisting six in that time, as well as being a dominant, pacey centre back.

The Greek has also ensured Roma have one of the best defences in Italy. This past season Roma finished 3rd in the Serie A and conceded just 28 goals in 38 league games. Only Juventus had a better defensive record.

Manolas also played a key role in Roma’s epic come back in last seasons Champions League vs Barcelona as he scored one of the three goals Roma needed to knock Barca out.

Now though, it seems as though Manolas is weighing up his options from outside of Italy and given Chelsea need to rebuild this summer in order to challenge for a Champions League spot, signing someone like Manolas would make a real statement.

    Managerial situation

Given Chelsea’s current managerial situation, you might not expect them to be signing anyone until they have a clear idea of who their manager will be for the 2018/19 season.

It’s well known that Antonio Conte is very likely to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

However, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is reluctant to sack Conte, as that will involve a £9m payoff for the last year of his contract.

Maurizio Sarri is the favourite to become the next Chelsea boss. But even though Sarri has already left Napoli and has been replaced by Carlo Ancelotti, Chelsea would still have to pay Napoli around £4.5 million in compensation for Sarri.

As a result, it doesn’t look like Chelsea’s managerial crisis will be resolved anytime soon. But that has not stopped Chelsea’s recruitment team eyeing Manolas as a potential target this summer.
