Things go from bad to worse for Newcastle as Shelvey stamps on Tottenham’s Dele

    Red card

When your team are newly promoted, and have already seen a quiet transfer window with few players coming in, and then take to the field in the opening game of the season and see two injuries in the first half, you’d do everything you could to stay on the field, try and help the side and be available for the next game.

Or so you would think. Not, apparently, if you’re Newcastle United skipper Jonjo Shelvey, who saw red after stamping on Dele Alli – right in front of the referee.

He had the cheek to ask why he was being sent off, and manager Rafa Benitez did not look impressed either, although when looking back on the incident his anger may well be directed at the player and not the officials – and the fans were not happy.

Some people inexplicably tried to blame the Tottenham Hotspur player for the sending off, but the majority of people agreed Shelvey was in the wrong – and everything was compounded when Dele managed to put Spurs ahead to boot.

Newcastle fans started to worry about what they were going to do in the next game, which happens to be a relegation six pointer against Huddersfield to boot, with injuries and suspensions already hitting hard.
