Newcastle keen on permanent deal for Chelsea star

As per reports in the English media this afternoon, Newcastle United are eyeing the permanent summer signing of Chelsea loanee Kenedy.

    Struggles

Kenedy, a 21-year-old Brazilian youth international, arrived at Chelsea from Brazilian outfit Fluminense in 2015 amid much fanfare.

However, since signing for the Blues, he has managed just 15 Premier League appearances, only one of which came last season.

A loan spell with Watford during the second half of last season also proved unsuccessful, with the South American managing just a solitary appearance for the Hornets.

    On the move

In addition to his on-pitch struggles, Kenedy also had to be disciplined and subsequently sent home by Chelsea during the club’s pre-season tour of China last summer, after making insulting comments about the country.

The youngster was expected to move on in the weeks that followed as a result, but, with Chelsea having tried and failed to bring in Juventus left-back Alex Sandro until the closing stages of the transfer market, Kenedy was, in the end, forced to remain at Stamford Bridge to act as cover for Marcos Alonso.

He failed to make a single Premier League appearance for the Blues over the opening half of the season, though, managing just 5 outings between the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

    Star performer

As such, following weeks of speculation, Kenedy eventually secured a move away from Stamford Bridge in January, joining Newcastle United on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

And the gifted South American has wasted little time in endearing himself to the Magpies’ faithful, having looked majorly impressive during his 6 Premier League outings to this point, racking up 2 goals and 1 assist, and putting in a match-winning performance versus Southampton at the weekend.

Unsurprisingly, Kenedy’s form at St. James’ Park has led to speculation regarding whether Newcastle could look to make his move permanent in the summer.

Chelsea refused to include a purchase option in the loan terms of the Brazilian’s January switch, amid suggestions that Kenedy could still have a future at Stamford Bridge.

    Staying put?

However, as per reports from the Mirror and more today, Newcastle will nevertheless attempt to coax Chelsea into parting with Kenedy for good come the summer, with early suggestions that an offer of around £15 million could be enough to get a deal over the line.

The South American himself recently admitted that he would be open to the idea of remaining on Tyneside, as long as the club avoids relegation to the Championship.
