Man United edge closer to signing England international defender

    United pursuit

Manchester United are edging closer to signing England international defender Michael Keane.

The former United academy graduate fancies a move back to his old club. The Telegraph report that he’s keen to return to Old Trafford but that Burnley are holding out for a big transfer fee.

This is despite the fact that Keane only has one year left on his deal.

    Transfer fee clause

United aren’t expected to make a formal offer for the centre-half until after the Europa League final against Ajax. The Clarets have bumped the price up to £30m, hoping that the interest justifies the price.

They also don’t want to sell for any less due to a clause that sees United take 25% of any fee they receive for him. So United will effectively be getting a discount on Keane if they buy back their ex-player.

The signing of Keane could spell the end of Chris Smalling’s United career. Jose Mourinho has doubts about the defender’s psychological strength. Phil Jones could also be placed on the scrapheap.
