Man United drop Facebook hint on the future of Wayne Rooney

    Wayne Rooney to stay?

Wayne Rooney may be the all-time top goal scorer for Manchester United and England but in recent months there had been an air of inevitability about his future.

Having played so few minutes in Manchester United’s most important games last season, Rooney was expected to leave the club this summer.

In the end, Rooney only scored five Premier League goals in 15 appearances, while he scored 10 goals in 49 games in all competitions.

    Mourinho wants to keep Rooney

Whether the 31-year-old remains at Old Trafford next season is up for debate. His contract with the Red Devils runs until 2019, however few believe Rooney is a first team starter for United.

On Monday, The Times claimed that Jose Mourinho surprisingly wants to keep Wayne Rooney.

According to The Times: “Staying at Old Trafford is not some sort of last resort for Rooney. Jose Mourinho, the United manager, wants to keep him, aware that a player who made 25 Premier League appearances last season will have a role to play even if, at 31, he will not be the first name on his team-sheet.”

Have Man United confirmed Rooney is staying?

On Monday, Manchester United fans believe the club may have dropped their own hint on the future of Wayne Rooney.

This morning, Manchester United changed their profile picture on Facebook, it features four players in the new grey away kit for 2017/2018.

Wayne Rooney is joined by Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera.

    Rooney is back

The picture is dominated by comments about Rooney’s return to the Facebook profile picture of Manchester United.

The first comment says: “Rooney is back”. Cue plenty of discussion about how important the club captain is to Jose Mourinho’s plans next season.

One comment attempts to explain the return of Rooney (at least on Facebook): “They Probably didn’t find any club for him that’s why…”
