    Botswana: President Khama Applauds Residents

Modipane — President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama has commended residents of Modipane for taking it upon themselves to build a shelter at the kgotla which he said would remain a hallmark for many years to come.

Speaking during the official opening of the shelter on Friday, President Khama said what residents had done had made Botswana 'what it is today' and had been entrenched in the culture of Setswana.

He applauded them for the spirit of volunteerism which had borne them "a beautiful leobo which shall be used for different gatherings."

The President further said the P100 individual contributions and companies contributions had made it possible for the project to be completed.

He added that the Office of the President also contributed P30 000 towards the completion of the project and he was happy to be officially opening it for them.

President Khama encouraged the residents to continue the good gesture of doing things for themselves instead of relying on government or the local authorities.

President Khama reminded residents that during his visit to Mokatse in November last year, he promised to travel with Modipane Primary School polka dance group to the Polka Festival in Tsabong, scheduled for Saturday.

He said arrangements would be made so that they travelled together to polka festival which would give them an opportunity to learn.

The President donated 50 chairs to Modipane residents to be used during the community and Kgotla activities.

Giving the project overview, the chairperson of Leobo committee, Mr Kabelo Lebekwe said the project was an initiative from a group of youth but due to challenges they faced they shared it with the community of Modipane.

Mr Lebekwe said the residents agreed to contribute to help deliver the project and despite the challenges they faced they managed to raise funds and completed the project.

He said they relied on the Vision 2016 pillars of A United and Proud Nation and A Prosperous, Productive and Innovative Nation.

They also attained two of the President's Five D's being Development and Dignity to help them achieve their main goal, as they had redeemed their community and given it its dignity back by giving the Kgotla uplift.

He said the project total cost amounted to P400 000 and thanked the business community, individuals and all stakeholders who contributed towards the completion of the project.

In his welcoming remarks, Kgosi Fanuel Mokalake said after realising that government was running out of funds for projects, they undertook the project because it could take many years before government could fund the project.

Giving a vote of thanks, Kgosi Segale Linchwe said it was interesting to see residents come together for a purpose which at the end brought happiness.

He said in everything that was done there would always be those who objected and they should not be demoralised in reaching their intended goal.

Kgosi Segale asked them to forgive their detractors and allow them space in the new leobo.BOPA
