Barcelona open talks with representatives of Sevilla defender

As per a report from Spanish outlet Sport, La Liga leaders Barcelona have opened negotiations with the representatives of Sevilla defender Clement Lenglet.

    Impressive performer

Lenglet, a 22-year-old central defender, has been on the books of Sevilla since January of last year, when he made the move to Andalusia from French outfit Nancy for 5 million Euro.

In hindsight, the move has proven an absolute masterstroke on the part of Sevilla, with Lenglet having emerged as one of the Spanish top-flight’s most impressive stoppers to this point in the campaign.

The French youth international has appeared in 30 of his side’s 32 La Liga fixtures (28 starts), notching 3 goals and 1 assist in the process, as well as proving a key factor in the club’s surprise run to the quarter-finals of this season’s Champions League.

    Barca bound?

Unsurprisingly, Lenglet’s stellar showings for Sevilla have led to links between the no-nonsense stopper and some of European football’s biggest clubs, with Barcelona the side most persistently touted as a potential destination.

The Blaugrana are thought to be on the lookout for central defensive reinforcements this summer, with Yerry Mina having so far struggled to impress following his arrival from Palmeiras in January, and Samuel Umtiti being persistently linked with an exit from the Camp Nou.

And, as per the aforementioned report from Sport this afternoon, Barca have taken their interest in Lenglet a step further over the last few days, after opening talks with the Sevilla star’s representatives over a move to Catalunya.
